I moved in the house, and I would come in the house, and right in the front hallway, you could always smell lilacs. They are Chinese Chippendale. And thats what they were doing in France to keep from getting it taxed. And right outside the window right here, is a great big round, thing thats all brickgreat big round thing, big as this room, covered-overand thats where all the water from the drain pipe from the roof would go in there and fill it, and it was called a cistern, and that was connected to the kitchen downstairs. Everything has to be environmentally done properly, so by the time you figure it out, youre spending more money, when youre making no money because you have no horses. But they did a lot for me. Burke: I dont find any difference living here. Youd have to see the house to see what Im talking about. It doesnt happen on the North Shore because were very condensed and its a dense population. Q: Your collection of the items that you bought from Mrs. Murphy. I mean, you talked about it, when you were a kid, that it was this big house that you would see when you were out on, Daller: Its a part of the history of Staten Island. I should really do something to save it. And it just was luck that I had just sold a real estate deal and made a lot of money. Im getting rid of everything. He said, I have three of the most beautiful Persian carpets from Persia, said, You cant get them anymore. He said, Theyre antiques but they are brand new, never used. He said, Im giving them to you. And its more expensive to keep her horses there than it was here. And it did all the dental workany kind of dental work and everything was manufactured there. So as long as you have people, youre going to have change, and people are going to say, That doesnt work! They cant do anything. Save my house. And I thought, Oh, shit. I was down on the beach one day, I forgot what were doing. I open the door to the parlor. Im only a salesman in a department store. I said, and its going to take a lot of money to put that house back together. She said, Well, Im going to help you all I can. And I said, But why would I fix a house I didnt own? And she said, Well, why dont we talk about that. She said, If youre interested in buying it, I will make the arrangements that you can own it. And I renovated the bar, I renovated the other side, my two sisters came to work for me, running the kitchen and the dining room. I bought those buildings. She had a caretaker or she had a woman that took care of her, or something. It was a sweet sixteen Ill never forget. I want it now. I could never get it. So my sister Bess said, Well, come on, lets go to Florida. And I said, Oh, shit. So because it was done like the French did, I never had to pay tax, or only tax on a two-story house, instead of a three-story. But the basement was the summer dining rooms and summer kitchen. And if I couldnt take care of them, Id call down to the base and theyd send a helicopter and theyd pick them up and take them down to the hospital, because we had to take care of them, because Alaska was ours, and all the Eskimos was our responsibility.
